It took 15 years (1883-1898) for pioneer craftsman to complete a Mormon tabernacle in Provo, Utah, but only a few hours for fire to destroy it in December of 2010. In the early hours following the fire, contractors were able to execute an unprecedented engineering feat to preserve what remained of the tabernacle by creating an innovative lattice structure to stabilize the building. While a team of architects & preservation experts pored over records of the original facility, the envelope was lightened and strengthened, then supported beneath with steel piers to allow for excavation of a basement … a move that doubled the usable space and allowed the old tabernacle to become a gleaming new temple. Hear and see the story of a truly amazing project that illustrates what’s possible when skill & experience intersect with vision, a sense of responsibility, and a “can do” spirit of collaboration.
