Culture Matters: How a Project Team Survived a Mass Exodus of Leadership

Tuesday, February 1, 2022
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM (EST)

Zoom

Event Details

On a $10M+ design and construction project in rural Wyoming, the project delivery team experienced a very unique event.  While all multi-year projects deal with staff turnover at some point, this project suffered a loss of more than 60% of its original team leaders … most of which occurred between the end of design and the start of construction.  This session will explore the specific team-building and project culture-setting strategies employed throughout the project, helping carry it to successful completion despite the leadership changes

Learning Objectives

Attendees will

  • discover how to successfully set and maintain culture on a project;
  • identify how the Owner culture and belief system of collaboration helps set expectations and deliver the work;
  • explore what specific tools and techniques are applicable to other projects; and
  • examine the continuing efforts taken by the team to keep the culture alive and vibrant.

PRESENTERS

Brad McCaslin
Project Manager, Banner Health

As the son of a civil and structural engineer, Brad grew up playing in the dirt while Dad inspected bridges and visited job sites.  He had the opportunity to assist on a land-surveying crew during the summers through high school and college, which helped form his fascination with “how the sausage is made”.

Brad has been formulating and executing capital construction programs on the Owner side since 2005.  At Banner Health, he’s been collaborating with users and design and construction partners on the delivery of projects in numerous facilities in Wyoming, Colorado, and Nebraska.  Brad has a Bachelor’s in Construction Management from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln.

Juan Ramos, AIA, LEED AP BD+C
Associate Principal, Boulder Associates

From a childhood love of Legos and puzzles to his career as an architect, Juan has always been fascinated by the evolution of the design process. He is enthralled with the idea that design solutions manifest from problem-solving and evolve into a conceptual sketch or idea; this ideation turns into construction documents and, eventually, a built response that answers the initial problem.

At Boulder Associates, Juan champions team building and collaboration to engage all stakeholders in the design process. Leveraging his strengths as a project manager, communicator, and developer, he excels at seeking out elegant solutions to complex design problems. Juan has been at BA since 2005 and has a Master of Architecture from the University of Colorado, Denver.  He’s a licensed architect, LEED AP and an Associate Principal.

Brian Faulkner, LEED AP
Senior Project Manager Adolfson & Peterson Construction

Faulkner has over three decades of experience in the commercial construction industry, beginning in the field and currently in project management. His focus over the last decade has been on the construction of healthcare facilities. Raised by a construction Superintendent, and having the natural curiosity of an engineer, he gained experience in multiple roles of the construction process.

Faulkner brings a deep and wide understanding of the complex processes unique to the medical sector. Most recently, Faulkner has led projects that have constructed hospital facilities in Wyoming, constructed long-term health care facilities, and medical rehabilitation facilities in the Denver Metro Area. Faulkner is a results-oriented leader with a passion for the details.

At Adolfson & Peterson (Denver), he is a Senior Project Manager.  He earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology from the University of North Texas.
