Organization Overview
Charleston County is one of South Carolina’s oldest local governments, evolving from colonial-era administrative districts into the modern council‑administrator system used today. After centuries of shifting boundaries, centralized authority, and fragmented local control, voters in the mid‑20th century pushed for a more unified, professional government structure. Today, Charleston County operates with an elected council and a professional administrator, delivering coordinated, responsive services to one of the state’s fastest‑growing regions.
